In the early 16th century, Chittorgarh, the capital of Mewar, was under attack by the Mughal emperor Akbar’s forces. During one similar attack in 1568, the Mughals succeeded in landing Chittorgarh after a prolonged siege. Udai Singh II, the sovereign of Mewar, managed to escape along with his child son, Maharana Pratap, and some pious sympathizers.
While fleeing from the adversary, Panna Dhai set up herself in a critical situation. She realized that the adversary dogfaces were closing in on them, and the child Napoleon Maharana Pratap’s life was in grave peril. In an act of selflessness and immolation, she made a stalwart decision. Panna Dhai changed her own son with Maharana Pratap, dressing her son in the Napoleon’s royal apparel.
