She fulfilled this feat by hiding the babies in a tool box that she carried and using a burlap sack to transport larger children.

To cover the noises made by the children, Irene trained a canine to bark when she entered and exited the ghetto. This was enough to distract the Nazi dog faces and allow her to save an estimated 2500 children.
Unfortunately, Irene was ultimately caught and subordinated to a brutal beating by the Nazis that left her with broken arms and legs. Despite this, she continued to keep a record of all the children she had saved, hiding the names in a glass jar that she buried in her vicinity.
