Emirates operates flight powered with 100% sustainable aviation fuel, Emirates has operated its first corner demonstration flight on a Boeing 777 300ER, powering one of its machines with 100 Sustainable Aviation Energy( SAF).
The flight took off from Dubai International Airport( DXB), and was commanded by Captain Fail Vajifdar and Captain Khalid Nasser Akram, flying for further than one hour over the Dubai bank.
The demonstration flight powered by SAF holds particular significance as the UAE declares 2023 the ‘ Time of Sustainability ’. The time will showcase the UAE’s commitment to seek innovative results to challenges similar as energy, climate change and other issues related to sustainability. The flight supports collaborative assiduity sweats to enable a future of 100 SAF flying and help advance the UAE’s sustainability objects.
Emirates ’ demonstration flight, the first in the Middle East and North Africa to be powered by 100 SAF, supports broader sweats to reduce lifecycle CO2 emigrations as the assiduity looks to gauge up its use of SAF. The breakouts will also help to upgrade the playbook for unborn SAF demonstrations, and support future instrument where 100 drop- in SAF energy is approved for aircraft. presently, SAF is approved for use in all aircraft, but only in composites of over to 50 with conventional spurt energy.
Emirates worked alongside mates GE Aerospace, Boeing, Honeywell, Neste and Virent to land and develop a mix of SAF that nearly replicates the parcels of conventional spurt energy. At each mix rate, a host of chemical and physical energy property measures were carried out. After multiple lab tests and rigorous trials, they arrived at a blending rate that imaged the rates of spurt energy.
Eighteen tones of SAF were blended, comprised of HEFA- SPK handed by Neste( hydro reused esters and adipose acids and synthetic paraffinic kerosene) and HDO- SAK from Virent( hydro deoxygenated synthetic sweet kerosene). The 100 SAF supplied one GE90 machine, with conventional spurt energy supplying the other machine.
The test flight further demonstrates the comity of the especially amalgamated SAF as a safe and dependable energy source. The promising outgrowth of this action also adds to the body of assiduity data and exploration around SAF blends in advanced proportions, paving the way for standardization and unborn blessing of 100 drop- in SAF as a relief for spurt energy, well above the current 50 mix limit.
Adel Al Redha, Chief Operating Officer, Emirates Airline said “ This flight is a corner moment for Emirates and a positive step for our assiduity as we work inclusively to address one of our biggest challenges – reducing our carbon footmark. It has been a long trip to eventually see this demonstration 100 SAF flight take off. Emirates is the first passenger airline in the world to operate a Boeing 777 powering a GE machine with 100 SAF.
Similar enterprise are critical contributors to assiduity knowledge on SAF, and give data to demonstrate the use of advanced composites of SAF for unborn nonsupervisory blessings. We hope that corner demonstrations breakouts like this one, will help open the door to gauge up the SAF force chain and make it more available and accessible across topographies, and most importantly, affordable for broader assiduity relinquishment in the future. ”
GE Aerospace congratulates Emirates on this major achievement. SAF is critical to helping the aeronautics assiduity reach its thing to be net zero by 2050 and collaborations like this to test 100 SAF encyclopedically will help bring us near to this target, said Aziz Koleilat, Vice President of Global Deals and Marketing for the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Turkey at GE Aerospace. All GE Aerospace machines can operate on approved SAF composites moment and we’re helping support the blessing and relinquishment of 100 SAF.
“ Boeing congratulates Emirates on its successful flight tests using sustainable aeronautics energy( SAF), ” said Omar Arekat, Vice President, Commercial Deals and Marketing, Middle East, The Boeing Company. SAF will play a critical part in the aeronautics assiduity’s commitment to be net zero by 2050 taking strong assiduity collaboration. We were proud to mate with Emirates on these tests and look forward to further working with our mates to enable the wide use of SAF across the globe. ”
“ We’re agitated to apply our technology to such a corner demonstration. The 331- 500 supplementary power unit or APU is an integral part of the Boeing 777 aircraft system. The APU provides main machine starting, environmental control and exigency back- over systems for the aircraft on the ground and in- flight. It uses the same energy as the main propulsion machines. presently the APU is certified to run on only 50 SAF, so this demonstration is a big first step in showing full APU functionality and capability when running on 100 SAF, ” said Mosab Alkubaisy, Director of Airlines, Honeywell Aerospace Middle East.
Jonathan Wood, Vice President EMEA, Renewable Aviation at Neste said “ Sustainable aeronautics energy plays a pivotal part in reducing the emigrations of air trip but to completely work its decarburization eventuality we need to enable 100 SAF use. Test breakouts like this Emirates flight with Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Energy are an important step towards 100 SAF instrument. Neste is working nearly together with mates to accelerate the vacuity and use of SAF as we increase our SAF product capacity to1.5 million tons per annum by the end of this time. We look forward to growing the force of SAF also to Dubai. ”
“ Variant’s technology converts extensively available, factory- grounded sugars into the composites that make 100 sustainable aeronautics energy possible, without the need to blend with traditional spurt energy, ” said Dave Kettner, President and General Counsel of Virent, Inc. “ Along with our parent company Marathon Petroleum Corporation, we’re committed to meeting moment’s energy requirements while investing in an energy different future, and moment’s flight is a great illustration of this commitment.
We ’re agitated about this occasion to work with our forward- thinking associates at Emirates, GE Aerospace, Boeing, Honeywell and Nested as we demonstrate that we can power sustainable aeronautics without modifying moment’s ultramodern airline machines or the structure that serves the airline assiduity. ”
Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO at ENOC praised the achievement as it coincides with 2023 as the ‘ Time of Sustainability ’, which was blazoned by the UAE’s President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It also represents a major step towards reducing carbon dioxide emigrations and achieving climate impartiality.
He added “ At ENOC, we precedence’s working nearly with our strategic mates to apply a public roadmap for sustainable aeronautics energy. This not only aims to accelerate the decarburization of the aeronautics sector, but also contributes to achieving the UAE’s pretensions in climate impartiality, enhances the effectiveness and conservation of energy, as well as positions the UAE as a indigenous mecca for sustainable aeronautics energy. Playing an active part in supplying Dubai airfields with aeronautics energy, ENOC Group is sharing in this achievement by securing and blending sustainable aeronautics energy, which will help to secure this type of energy in the UAE in the future. ”
Emirates is committed to supporting enterprise that help minimize its CO2 emigrations, and the airline has formerly made great strides in energy effectiveness and conservation as well as functional advancements. The airline also supports IATA’s collaborative assiduity commitment to reach net zero emigrations by 2050, and is exploring openings to compound functional energy effectiveness, SAF, low carbon aeronautics energies( LCAF) and renewable energy.
The airline formerly runs a comprehensive energy effectiveness program that laboriously investigates and implements ways to reduce gratuitous energy burn and emigrations, wherever it’s operationally doable. Some of the programmer’s most significant enterprise include the operation of “ flex tracks ”, or flexible routings – partnering with air navigation service providers to produce the most effective flight plan for each flight. These sweats have been ongoing since 2003, and Emirates has been working with IATA to extend this routing system across the world as a standard operating procedure where possible.
Emirates ’ first flight powered by SAF blended with spurt energy was in 2017, operating from Chicago O’Hare field on a Boeing 777. It entered its first SAF- powered A380 delivery in 2020, and also upraised 32 tones of SAF for its breakouts from Stockholm that same time.
